Glacier High School will again be participating in Poetry Out Loud this year. This nation-wide contest has been going on since 2006 and provides students with the opportunity to study, memorize, and perform some of the most influential and timeless poems of the English language and by doing so they are immersed in powerful expression and profound ideas. In the past, Glacier has had students progress through contest levels at our school, county, and onto the state competition. Our school-level competition will be held at the Oakhurst campus on Wednesday, November 18 and the student that moves on will take part in the Madera county competition at Yosemite High School on Saturday, January 23, 2016. A wealth of information is available at http://www.poetryoutloud.org/ . For an overview of the experience, click on the tab titled “The Competition” and for this year’s official anthology of poetry, video and audio of poetry, and tips on reciting click on the “Poems & Performance” tab. If you are interested in this year’s Poetry Out Loud experience at Glacier High School here is what you need to do before Saturday, November 7: 1. 1. Contact Kaylene Friesen at [email protected] and provide your name, grade, school site, phone number, and that you are interested in Poetry Out Loud so that she can get more specific information to you including judging criteria and other tips. 2. 2. Read, view, and listen to as much as you possibly can on the Poetry Out Loud site, especially the items mentioned above. 3. 3. Begin looking through the poetry anthology on the Poetry Out Loud website or the print version if one is available and choose a poem to recite. Poems must be from this year’s Poetry Out Loud anthology. This can be a very rewarding experience for high school students and we encourage you to consider being a part of it. Our contest on November 18 will begin after 2:00 and we will let you know the exact time next week. This is an important reminder that Attendance is due this Friday, November 6th by 12pm. To download a blank attendance form, click the appropriate link below:Please make sure to sign each line in blue or black ink and mark subjects covered. A child is not considered absent if at least one subject was covered for that day. If you mark absent on the form it is important to write in the reason for the absence (such as sick, ill, doctors appointment, etc) otherwise this absence is considered un-excused. If you have 3 or more un-exused absences in the year your child is considered truant by California Law.
Once again this form is very important to turn in on time. Failure to turn the form in on time will result in a non-compliance letter. Please contact your Charter Teacher if you have further questions. |
